Sunscreen

IT'S SUMMERTIME! So, let's chat about sunscreen. Did you know that toxin filled sunscreen is doing damage to coral reefs and other ocean life? If it works in harmful ways in the water, what do you think it's doing to your skin?

There are two types of sunscreen, chemical and barrier. Chemical sunscreen works by absorbing the UV rays, while barrier sunscreen blocks them out. Chemical sunscreens are made of smaller particles which are more easily absorbed into your skin causing increased production of free radicals, among other things. Ew. Mineral sunscreens are made of large particles that do not easily absorb into the skin, therefore creating a safe barrier.

Young Living Mineral Sunscreen is HYPOALLERGENIC and CONTAINS NO parabens, UV chemical filters, phthalates, petrochemicals, animal-derived ingredients, synthetic fragrances or dyes. It comes in SPF 10 and SPF 50.

I will admit that SPF 10 doesn't sound like much here in Florida, but let's consider what that number actually means. SPF is short for "sun protection factor." Each number stands for the amount of protection you would get from UV damage in an hour. SPF 10 should provide ten hours of protection, in theory, but because we sweat when we get hot, some of the sunscreen comes off. Reapplication is recommended every 80 minutes. It is thick, so it may require extra care to rub in. SPF 10 provides 90% of UVB protection and SPF 50 gives you 98% protection.

Young Living recently came out with the SPF 50 mineral sunscreen. It has earned the Seal of Recommendation by the Skin Cancer Foundation. The Skin Cancer Foundation grants its Seal to products that meet the Foundation’s specific criteria for effective UV sun protection. Plus, it is infused with essential oils which are good for you!

Hawaii has banned the use of certain chemical sunscreens that are harmful to the environment. The chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are used in more than 3,500 of the world's most popular sunscreen products, including Hawaiian Tropic, Coppertone and Banana Boat, will be prohibited.

What better way to help protect your health and the health of the environment? Ditch your chemical laden sunscreen, and switch to YL Mineral Sunscreen!
